MOT Testing in Coleshill: What to Expect and How to Prepare

The MOT test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old in the UK. It checks that your car meets the minimum safety and environmental standards required to drive on public roads. But many drivers aren't sure exactly what gets checked — or what they can do to improve their chances of passing.

At Kat Can Cars in Coleshill, we carry out thorough MOT inspections and always explain any advisories or failures clearly, so you know exactly what's needed and why.

The MOT covers a wide range of checks, including: lights (headlights, brake lights, indicators, hazards), tyres (tread depth, condition, pressure), brakes (pads, discs, handbrake), steering and suspension, seatbelts, windscreen wipers and washers, horn, exhaust emissions, and bodywork (no sharp edges or excessive corrosion).

There are three possible outcomes: a pass, a pass with advisories (items to monitor but not yet a failure), or a fail. If your car fails, we'll explain exactly what needs fixing and provide a quote before any work is carried out.

To give your car the best chance of passing, it's worth doing a few simple checks beforehand: make sure all your lights work, check your tyre tread depth (the legal minimum is 1.6mm), top up your washer fluid, and make sure your number plates are clean and legible.

It's also worth booking your MOT a few weeks before it's due rather than leaving it to the last minute. That way, if any work is needed, you have time to get it sorted without the stress of an expired MOT.

We offer free text reminders when your MOT is due, so you never miss the date. If you're in Coleshill, Birmingham, or the surrounding area, get in touch to book your MOT with Kat Can Cars.
